Historical surfaces suggesting fleeting moments, veils of perception and eroding memories.
Tierney starts with the texture of the tin ceiling. She then adds layers of transparent sewing patterns which suggest organic forms like figures or landscapes. Stenciled words and numbers, drips, more collaged elements and spray painted shadows of objects build up and are worn away to create a beautiful surface holding evidence of time passing.
Tierney graduated from MICA in 1985. She has been making small collage paintings on paper for twenty years and is now working in this larger scale. Her studio is in a warehouse in Washington DC, where she also does large scale assemblages incorporating found objects and carved wood. more work can be seen at
