outdoor sculpture in NYC
Hey, NYC folk...the 26th annual BWAC Outdoor Sculpture Show is opening this Sunday 20th around noon over at Fulton Ferry State Park (between the Manhattan and Bkln Bridges). Big art, live music, sculptors everywhere...a good time.
I'll be there chaparoning my "Real Bigwheel"; got to be sure it doesn't do too much ass-kicking on those flagrant waterfalls that will no doubt be trying to hog all the eyes. Check their site bwac.org for directions etc. The exhibition is titled "Relative Environment" (a darn good art-title). Hope to see you. (you'll recognize me by my black Conan the Barbarian tee-shirt - I always dress-up for these affairs). |

Perhaps you should go formal and wear a tie...made of an artistically twisted tie-rod. Have a great showing! |

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
No Merlion, same ol' Bigwheel. Its been makin the rounds. Don't expect it to sell too soon but its quite popular otherwise. Some of our work acts as our public relations team, other work is the sheltered outcast and other works brings home the bacon and yet other works are tireless pioneers. And just when you think you've figured out which kind of work functions in which role...the outcast suddenly brings home some bacon. So you just got to make it ALL.

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
Matt , we're having a big party here in NJ Sat. Night (19th) so don't think we'll be very mobile anytime Sunday. Going into city wed and will try to take the subway over to catch it. If you're in NJ sat night you (and anyone else here) are welcome to come by for some beers, wine and all the good smelling stuff my wife is making right now. Later E

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
Damn that sounds fun Eric, But I was not equipped with a "stop" button; so if I wanna make it to my own show I better stay in my hotel room with the family and behave Saturday night. You and I will catch a few at the de-install of SICA in October - I owe you anyhow.
If you do go to BWAC on wed, take a few of those cool underhanded shots you do and post em...a very unusual photo-perspective and great as a detail. |

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
Congratulations on the show. Hoping I can make it down there on Sunday and finally see the 'Big Wheel' live and in person. Be prepared for a hot and humid day around NYC!

Is that "Twist" in the BG? Tough to imagine she's spending her summer at home. One of my favorites.

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
The Real Bigwheel sits on the riverfront, doing battle with the bridges (but not the waterfalls, they turned out to be no competition at all...note the tiny thing in the background). It was a nice opening, me and EJB hung out quite awhile for some good art-talk.
Sub, "Twist" is too big and heavy, haven't found the right show for him yet, his day will come. |

Nice Pic of the trike. Great setting and looks like it was made for that spot. Do you know the nearest subway stop to the show?
Sorry just found them from your 1st post http://bwac.org/exhibitions/ Last edited by suburbanartists : 07-22-2008 at 01:44 PM. |

Thanks for the picture. A close up view would make it more impressive, like the one you showed from Flickr.

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
ya nice pic. i always find it hard to tell the size of your sculptures from the pictures. i know you like to go big but when they are seen with something for scale i get an even better thrill from seeing them. they must really be enjoyable in person is that a train wheel on the front

And then there was this guy. Trying to kick start the big wheel. Struggling to impress his girl.

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
Matt, Great park for the show. Seems very similar type of show to SICA. I love the setting under the bridges and will definitely try to get some thing there next year. Fantastic setting in NYC.
What I keep learning over and over at these wide open spaced shows, is that anything you make that looks big in your backyard, studio, whatever, will Shrink in size and presence greatly. You simply can't go to big or bold. Now i am finally understanding why di Suvero and those guys needed to go so massive with the Storm King type pieces. In these settings, size does matter. 2 others from the show.
The branchomatic (below 2nd pic) by Joe Chirchirillo, he sounds familiar? is he on this site? Or maybe he had some pieces in one of the SICA shows? Last edited by suburbanartists : 07-27-2008 at 07:11 PM. |

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
Great shots Sub, thanks. I'm glad to see people enjoying the piece.
The curators of this show, for 26 years now, have always been sculptors. They have always made this show happen despite the growing limitations placed upon them by the gentrification of the area. But every year they persevere and the work goes up - and the bridges get some competition for a few months. |

Re: outdoor sculpture in NYC
SubA: I like that photo on the left, Evaldart's trike juxtaposed with the bridge. It looks like a claus oldenburg-type approach to bridge-building.
