The table has been set
I did this sculpture for a local art competition and its very personal to me. The idea for my sculpture came to me about two years ago. I wanted to sculpt the Bible’s story of Pharaoh's dream of the seven cows. The seven fat cows in his dream symbolise wealth, health and prosperous times. The seven thin cows, on the other hand, symbolise famine, sickness, death an approaching crisis. The two sets of cows allude to opposite sides – positive and negative. It’s a universal theme that is as much applicable to the individual’s life as it is to global political, social or economic issues.

Re: The table has been set
You really captured cows coming up out of a muddy pond. I spent time around cows when I was young. Your cows move like real cows move.

Re: The table has been set
The cows are excellent, and love your concept very much. I like it that the bases are more than bases, however don't understand why the geometric forms? Not a biggie, just wondering. All in all it is a very successful work.

Re: The table has been set
Thank you Rika and Raspero. Simple forms of the approaching cows have been arranged in a repetitive way to create intensity. I therefore decided to used simple geometric forms because I did not want to create distraction.
I made them narrow and high because there's no escape. The seven fat cows look more like sheep than cows. |

Re: The table has been set
Thanks, Dries. I see your point. I thought they were blocks, but now I see they are narrow. That cow that is stepping up creates such tension in the centre and the blocks emphasize that further. Love how you blended the two compositional elements so inventively with the cow!
