Re: Favorite Sculpture Quote
I think it was Cezanne who said, "sculpture is what you back into when viewing a painting".
From my father, "cut it twice and it's still too short". To this day I can't work with wood. I work in the land of almost, steel. An almost fit is a perfect fit! Just slap in the weld! Andy Warhol said this or something like this, "if you can't make it quick, don't make it". So many people put so much time into their work and never get compensated for it. Course quick is extremely relative. "A job is the artist's worst enemy". "Make it big and paint it red." |

Hi Oscar, Your last quote, "make it big and paint it red" must be from Mark DeSuvero.

Re: Favorite Sculpture Quote
These are all of my favorites, minus the repeats you all have already said!
The more the marbles wastes, the more the statue grows. - Michelangelo The artist must create a spark before he can make a fire and before art is born, the artist must be ready to be consumed by the fire of his own creation. - Auguste Rodin The greatest artist has no conception which a single block of white marble does not potentially contain within its mass, but only a hand obedient to the mind can penetrate to this image. - Michelangelo "The object of art is to give life shape." - Jean Anouilh "In everything that can be called art there is a quality of redemption." - Raymond Chandler |

"An artist who can stir a profound and insightful reaction that adds value and meaning to one's life is an artist whose work is important."
I have no idea who said it but it is certainly one of my goals within my work. Blake

"It is the job of a critic to be one up on the artist without actually
tampering with the canvas. To show that it is really you (the critic) who should have created the work,if you only had had the time. And since you hadn't , you are glad that someone else has, although obviously it might have been done much better" Stephen Potter |

Re: Favorite Sculpture Quote
Two gems, the first from Michelangelo's confession of faith:
"Heaven-born, the soul a heavenward course must hold; Beyond the visible world she soars to seek (For what delights the sense is false and weak) Ideal Form, the universal mould. The wise man, I affirm, can find no rest In that which perishes; nor will he lend His heart to aught that doth on time depend." And this, from Gilbert Murray in 1921: " The power of seeing things straight and knowing what is beautiful and noble, quite undisturbed by momentary boredoms or changes in taste, is a very rare gift and never perhaps possessed in full by anyone. But there is a profound rule of art, bidding a man in the midst of all his study of various styles or his pursuit of his own peculiar imaginations, from time to time se retremper dans la nature--'steep himself again in nature--'." |
