Artemis (Ἄρτεμις, Ártemis)

Virgin goddess of the hunt, wilderness, animals, young girls, childbirth, plague, and the moon. In later times she became associated with bows and arrows. She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and Apollo's twin sister. In art she was often depicted as a young woman dressed in a short knee-length chiton and equipped with a hunting bow and a quiver of arrows. Her attributes include hunting spears, animal pelts, deer and other wild animals. Her sacred animals are deer, bears, and wild boars. Diana was her Roman counterpart.


The greek goddess Artemis has been a popular theme for sculptors fr thousands of years. They mostly show her just standing still with bow and arrow.

As she was a huntress I thought I would try to depict her in a more dynamic hunting pose.

You may want to think carefully as to just how much detail you want to add. What you have there now is really good. You said you were looking to make her dynamic. You succeeded.

yes there is a danger of losing that if I spend to long on it.
It took abut 4 hrs so far to get the basic shape and about 30secs of bending the armature to a stance that jumped out at me as being right.
I intend to cloth this one and research the weapons of the time.

A wonderful naturalistic take on the huntress. Somewhere between your version and the classical interpretations you show is Paul Manship's great piece. I'd add it to your thread if I knew how.

Richard is right, Mantrid. There's is something special about the current state of this. Also, I am happy to see Artemis in something of less-than-divine pose; she's putting forth a measure of effort that subtly belies her stature as a deity. As close to belly-to-the-ground as she can get while still managing to retain something formidable in her overall form.

thinking of including a spear rather than usual bow and arrow. The bow apparently was a later association.
Had to put her on hold for the moment due to a house move

Thanks for bringing up Paul Manship biomorph. His interpretation may have subconsciously had some influence on me. I seem to remember seeing his Diana a few years ago
