Jesus Moroles unveiled Zig Zag Diamondback Totem
19 February 2008 University of Texas @ El Paso, a school he attended in 1978-1979 while an apprentice with Luis Jimenez.
The sculpture was donated to the university by Jeanne and Michael Klein, Austin based philanthropists.
The photographs were taken by my best friend, conceptual artist Michael Alford.
Standing from left to right are Diana Natalicio, president of UTEP, sculptors Jesus Moroles and Claude Montes.
Our works are prominently displayed in the World Sculpture Park in Changchun, China. I feel very proud to converse with him once again and most grateful for the dedication he wrote for me in his New book Moroles Granite Sculpture.

You are looking at two amazing sculptors who are in love with the same (woman) Stone! We idolize the same predecessors: Brancusi & Noguchi. We both live and work in Texas and have our sculptures in distant China. One difference though, I keep a very low profile locally until I make my impact in this region, however small.
Mr. Moroles is my living idol. I admired his works that I saw in San Angelo, Texas and Albuquerque, New Mexico, long before I met him. We share one philosophy: we create sculptures in stone for the sheer love of doing so. As stated in his book: "Jesus Moroles is....not bent on profit but a hearty desire to embrace his audience - in fact, the world - with his art and have fun doing it."

Candyce Garrett also does amazing work in granite.

I visited Candyce Garrett's studio while she was working on a tall figure in limestone. That was back in early 1990's. I was salivating with envy to be able to work on a stone that large.
It was her who informed me of the quarry in Garden City, Texas, only miles from where I lived and went to school. I drove near that quarry several times on the way to the Midland-Odessa airport and never knew its existence. As a stone sculptor I should have known about such a place.
I love the human quality and element in Candyce's work, mostly the limestones. Her granite work after the encounter with Moroles resemble too much like Moroles.

Hey I was luck enough to happen apon his show at the Klien gallery in Chigago in 1993,very cool.He has his own style that you reconise,and it,s unique.IA

Couldn't you say the same about Moroles vis-a-vis Noguchi? and on and on ad infinitum?

Moroles and Noguchi are to me a bit distant. (Moroles was in a car accident
on his way to a party at Noguchi so the two never really met). I think Moroles
is a lot closer to Brancusi's endless columns.
So far two sculptors who apprenticed with Moroles are producing works that
are like clones from the Moroles fountain.
