great sculpture gallery in amsterdam

I recently went on a trip to Amsterdam in Holland to see some friends and they took me to this great sculpture gallery in the centre of the canal district. It's called De Beeldenwinkel which apparently means sculpture shop and is for sculpture lovers. This is their info page - http://www.theninestreets.com/de-bee...e-gallery.html

if you're visiting Amsterdam it's well worth a visit

Thank you Sonia for this information and for your enthousiasm about sculpture.

In dutch :
beeld (plur. beelden) = image(s), portrait(s), figure(s)
houwen = to cut, to strike
beeldhouwen = to sculpt in the tradition (stone, marble,...)

For contemporary art, the usual word is "sculptuur".

Anne - Thanks for this translation. Both words have English cognates, English and Dutch both having Germanic roots, with much admixture of French and other Latin terms in Englich.

Beeld = build (as in construct or sculpt)

houwen = hew (to cut)

Combination = build or sculpt by cutting, as in stone, marble, wood, etc. Small world, what?

Re: great sculpture gallery in amsterdam

Hi, I just visited the web site of De Beeldenwinkel gallery in Amsterdam and to be honest with you, I wasn't very impressed. I'm sure there are better sculptors than that working in Amsterdam.
Have a nice day,
Jeff

Ironman

It is what Anne would recognize as a « Boulewinkel”.

From http://tintin.eugraph.com/tqsect/feature/names/ - bollewinkel: in Brussels dialect, a local confectioner’s shop

Does this make the sculpture at De Beeldenwinkel "eye candy"?

How dull life would be "si nous parlions anglais seulement."

Vive la Tower of Babble!
