My Abstract Wood Carving on Show

The cultural center of a local philanthropy organization organises annually a 3D Art Exhibition. The scope this year is limited to ceramics, and wood and stone carvings. Unfortunately within this scope I can submit only one piece, an abstract wood carving. This has got accepted, and the exhibition is on now.

I called this artwork "Faith, hope and love", see below. The height is about 58 cm (23 in). The wood is very hard although I do not know what it is.

Edit: Sorry the picture image cannot be posted. The size limit is exceeded. I'll try again.

Re: My Abstract Wood Carving on Show

I'm liking the movement and quiet emotion in the piece. Do you have photos of the other sides ( so to speak, as it's roundish )?
Congrats on having your piece accepted!

Thanks Grommet.

Here's the back view.

By the way, we were all caught by surprise at the exhibition's opening ceremony. Although the Guest of Honor was announced to be the President of this philanthropy organization, at short notice the Minister in charge of the arts decided to visit the show. This is quite unpresidented. He is a Cabinet Minister whose portfolio also includes information and communication.

He was shown around a number of exhibits the organizer wanted to hightlight to him. Mine was one the artworks he was shown. This really made my day.

Here is a picture me talking to him (center with tie) in front of my artwork.

Oh. I'll try to post the pictures again. Here they are.

Artspan won't let me access your photos.
Were you giddy rubbing elbows with "movers & shakers" or did you ask him to hold your wine glass while you went back for a plate of food?
Just kidding, what an honor to be selected!

Nice, elegant forms, I like it. Is the warm colour the wood's natural colour or it's stain?

Re: My Abstract Wood Carving on Show

Congratulations on the new piece and presence in the show!

How did you find yourself deciding to work in wood? It's an interesting departure from the other sculptures and installation work you've shared. Nice focus on the negative space, and I like the fact you didn't render to surface too glossy; a rich tone-- Lots of pieces I've seen in wood tend to have over-finished surfaces that distract from the natural tone.

Good to see you posting your new work!

Re: My Abstract Wood Carving on Show

Thanks Rika and Obseq.

That is the wood's natural color. The gloss shine comes from a coat of vanish paint of course.

I am not changing style or material. It is the only abstract wood carving that I've done. It was fun doing it. Now I am mainly doing oil painting.

Re: My Abstract Wood Carving on Show

There is a very worthy balance here of working as directed by the original form and yet quietly having your way with it. You've resisted the urge to own the material by hacking it to hell (probably my apporoach) which demonstrates a muturity and confidence that will allow you to gain much from this brand of abstraction. Plus, it is void of political or historical content...always a step forward in my book. Good job Merlion

Thanks Evaldart.

Wow. I've just got a call that somebody is interested in buying this wood carving. It is not yet confirmed, but seems pretty sure.

Re: My Abstract Wood Carving on Show

Are you planning on any more pieces in wood? Seems like there is some good interest in your work as you mentioned above.

How do you like the process compared to the other work you've done?

Oh! I should have followed up to say that the purchase was confirmed. It is by the organizer of the show.

Re: My Abstract Wood Carving on Show

Congratulations M
Great piece and wonderful to have another sale and a new client.
I find that many clients offer repeat business so I send them all sorts of updates and communication to keep them thinking of art, suggest that you do this as well.
In any case well done.
Blake

When do we get to see?
I recall you mentioning that you were exploring oil painting several months back.
Looking forward to see the latest.

(...And hopefully, you received payment for the sculpture!)
