Re: Event in Abstraction

I decided to keep 'em guessing with that detail shot. Thats a tiny section of a 22 footer that I've almost finished. Wont be showing it but that is the general "tone" of the 12 - 15 pieces included. Yes, it is expected that a few will get exchanged for...for...meat, fillings, diesel fuel, my sons orthodontics, beer, ....and of course, MORE SCRAP METAL! But it aint NYC - so we'll see.

Re: Event in Abstraction

Truthfully, I cant be bothered with the nuances (and distractions) of "promotion". Brochures, posters, cards, announcements, graphic hoo-hah....its not what I care about (it gets done though). The work gets out there and does what IT does...whether or not the PEOPLE get there is not a concern. Things work out fine, always have...I am as much as I need to be to them (and likely more than they want from me).

They find me when they want to......and THAT is always best for everyone anyhow. Mangling is what I do; and its not too different from manipulating.

Re: Event in Abstraction

nope but if they give him money for his "way" then what could be better, money for nothing, money for everything, the best money you can get is money for doing what you love.

Re: Event in Abstraction

Craig, my region is dense with opportunities for artists. But then, there are TONS more artists here as well (more competition)...so its not difficult to stay busy if you're simply active and inserted. I'm sure I get FAR more rejections that artists in other areas...but, as paperwork and turning-a-buck are nothing compared to the overwhelming confrontations of mangling steel, I proliferate handily amongst my fellow creatures; my two-cents ever hovering whether they like it or not.

Re: Event in Abstraction

This is "Spire" a thirteen-footer . Completed just in time to make use of the generous ceiling height of the gallery space. Revelers came to see art - and art-ers came to revel; a good time.

Oh, it is indeed the MOST urgent of business to chaos the order and to order the chaos. I often forget which is which - or I suspect that they are one and the same.

i love the shot of them all together. looks like a display of evidence, of your artistic muscle, and mind flexing. trophies from the other side.
easy to see there must be gifts of enlightenment by your engagement with your matter. great work matt.

Re: Event in Abstraction

evald ,they are very interesting and attractive pieces. how long does it take you to produce that amount of work for a show ?

Re: Event in Abstraction

Scrap, I have no idea how long things take. Making these kinds of things occurs in a quite timeless state or "place". The lawn gets continually littered with them all the time (ever at least 50 of all sizes from 1 foot to 22 feet). When an exhibition opportunity arises I just get a team together.

And, pieces do represent the materials available. Sometimes a sculpture comes-together simply because of an inspiring scrap haul; I often make things spurred of the moment - that I had never intended to make at all beforehand.

Re: Event in Abstraction

thanks e ,
that makes a lot of sense. it would be such a distraction for me thinking about the huge task of producing such a large volume of work before such a show.

Re: Event in Abstraction

Killer shots. Love seeing everything in a sparse setting. We can't get too used to seeing everything in the Boneyard!
