Re: song du jour

Neil had heavy metal hair before there WAS heavy metal.
Rock that Mullet!

My morning song- my homey, Karl Blau, indie hearthrob on 4 continents, does some country-

(the keyboard player, Steve Moore, has played with both Earth and SunnO)

On the other side of the board D had a prolific (if not sustainable) analog recording business as well. I'll post a few of the bands he's engineered/produced.http://www.myspace.com/thepinkdelicates

Re: song du jour

Being only incidentally immersed in some areas of pop culture, I was probably the only person on this forum who had no conscious exposure to Fiona Apple's music prior to this post. And given the preponderance of video clips that strike me as having been manufactured in hell for the purpose of destroying grey matter, I found Fiona to be a pleasant suprise, although this particular clip does not show her range of expression, being subdued for the sake of irony.

She is actually a seemingly fun and creative individual, and not just because she looks just like my first girlfriend! (Back when gas was 25 cents per gallon, to give you an idea of how long ago that was!)
Her interview on the Late, Late show was hilarious.

Yep, Fiona is tight. I've watched each and every one of these vids and like them all very much.

You might like MIA too, but she's a bit more comercial..

Re: song du jour

All this talk of deskilling reminds me of our local Godfather of Indie Rock, Calvin Johnson.

Calvin is a legend- he was the guy who made DIY popular, way back in the early 80's, and has since done it all- DJ, rock bands, folk singer, producer, record label owner, and of course, he is the greatest dancer.

You want Lo-Fi, he is your man.

He has launched dozens of bands, many of whom do one record on his K records, and then sign with majors and get famous. He has made records with all kinds of heavies- people like Beck come to Calvin and record at K.

Kind of an acquired taste, I guess, but I like him a lot. Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System, Halo Benders, Sons of the Soil, or just solo with an acoustic guitar, Calvin has a lot of soul and integrity.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01k9ypH0IIM

I got him to play solo at my 50th birthday, along with the Blow.

Re: song du jour

Get the day off to funky start-
William Burroughs reads SEVEN SOULS, while Bill Laswell gets funky in the background.

I play this for the bald eagles early in the morning- they seem to dig it. They dont leave, anyway, they stay and bop along.

I think this one is even better-

So, for example, to avoid being a fool, when you want to fly to New York, you would be inclined to book a flight to Guam?

I don't think I'd take their advice too seriously. Seema like that mummy stuff didn't work out so well for them. Maybe they should have stuck to the obvious path. To quote some similar advice from Yogi Berra (a Himilayan baseball player):

"If you come to a fork in the road, take it!"

Re: song du jour

Yeah, its true, their culture only lasted 4000 years. Compared to the lifespans of our recent western european based empires, thats peanuts...

But I think the point is not to fall for the easy temptations- you know, greed, gluttony, lust, fame, wealth- stuff like that- and instead, take the harder, but more satisfying road.

Since most Christian mythology is loosely based on Egyptian mythology, the whole "seduced by the devil" stuff is plainly derived from exactly what Burroughs is talking about here.
Especially post middle ages, Egyptian origins, or misconceptions of them, has found its way deep into western european religion and culture- the Masons, for example, and the Rosecrucians, both christian spinoff cults, trace their "secrets" directly back to Egypt.

So what Burroughs is doing, when he reads, quotes, and, knowing Burroughs, makes up his own versions of Egyptian religious stories, is commenting on our present culture.

Certainly, in our world today, and even, (shudder) in our art world, the "obvious road" is quite popular- why learn laborious and timeconsuming manual skills, when you can just go online, cut and paste, and print?
Why read, when you can just watch the highlights on TV?

Yeah, the egyptians kicked every other "civilization's" asses hands-down. And religion, you havent even given a proper THOUGHT to the concept of death until you've bothered to build a Necropolis or 80.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maPLL...eature=related
