Basalt fiber

Few of the products made with basalt fibers include tripods, snowboards, and speakers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basalt_fiber

"...similar to carbon fibre and fiberglass, having better physicomechanical properties than fiberglass, but being significantly cheaper than carbon fibre. It is used as a fireproof textile in the aerospace and automotive industries and can also be used as a composite to produce products such as tripods...suitable replacement for asbestos..."

http://www.basaltfm.com/eng/fiber/info.html

"Strength-to-weight ratio of a basalt fiber exceeds strength of alloyed steel 2.5 times, strength of fiber glass 1.5 times."

Rods made of basalt fibers:
89% lighter in weight: one ton of basalt reinforcement rods provides the reinforcement of 9.6 tons of steel rebar
