Rockefeller Center's Atlas Statue to be Cleaned

This is from the NYTimes, May 4, 2008.

Bringing a Smile (Well, a Shine) to a Burdened Statue of Atlas

The Atlas at Rockefeller Center has years’ worth of lacquer and wax, in addition to
the weight of the heavens, to bear. The four-story-high statue will undergo a six-week cleaning.

Merlion, I don't think I've ever seen that. Maybe I shouldn't admit that. Will it be shiny after they are finished? Thanks for that. Scout

Scout, this is a picture of the whole statue. It shows Atlas supporting the heaven, in front of the Rockefeller Center, NYC.

Re: Rockefeller Center's Atlas Statue to be Cleaned

so it would be ironic if when they clean it [six weeks!] all that may be left afterwards is the big toe.......
could this be a sculpture thats brutalised by scale?, ie it was possibly auto enlarged from a small maquette without sensitive adjustment, artiste ala distance?
i would like to say that i have never seen this before, maybe not this one but it conforms to what i should like to term 'trophycorporate' . i dont think there was ever a critique or ism-epoch for that?
on the positive side i admire the making, whoever put that together was pushing it. .the top bit..

Re: Rockefeller Center's Atlas Statue to be Cleaned

There is a bit of technical info here about the cleaning process and future protection.

Atlas statue to get makeover in New York

NEW YORK, May 4 (UPI) -- Atlas, the four-story statue outside New York's Rockefeller Center, is getting a thorough cleaning to expose its original luster, officials say.

Officials with EverGreene Painting Studios, the company hired to clean the 7-ton bronze statue, say removing its multiple coats of lacquer will reveal its original patina or base coating, ...

Greene said the cleaning should uncover hidden artistic nuances such as the chiaroscuro, otherwise known as the contrast between light and dark in an art piece.

"There is all this detail in the sculpture that was brought out by the patina," he said. "It would have accentuated the chiaroscuro and shown the artists' tool marks. It had a kind of luminosity." ...

The Times said the Atlas cleaning will involve the use of a low-pressure steam bath and gel solvent to remove all built-up materials, along with the application of an acrylic protective coating to preserve it into the future

I like that, "trophycorporate".. We need a whole bunch more of that to celebrate free-enterprise and denounce socialism and all of that nasty nationalist sculpture... Rockefeller was great, stayed in one of his "cottages" one summer as a kid in Gray Rock Maine, astounding property.

Racine may have got this right - the top part (head and shoulders pic) looks impressive. Dramatic stylisations and great sense of material here. But the whole piece is leaden. Artiste ala distance - I like that...

The sense of exaggurated mass which is what I think you are responding to is typical of much art made during the art deco period. You could compare that piece to the works of Wheeler Williams, Sidney Waugh, and two others who did so with more grace; Paul Manship and Donald De Lue.

Re: Rockefeller Center's Atlas Statue to be Cleaned

When I first saw the title of the thread, I thought it was about Paul Manship's "Golden Boy" or Icarus, the gold-leafed piece which hovers above the skating rink / ice rink. This piece does somewhat resemble Manship's GB, but it may not be by him.
