How do I make a dirt sphere?

Hi, I'm new.

I am currently working on a bronze and earth sculpture. For the earth portion, I'm attempting to build a sphere (the size of a standard basketball) that has a physical appearance of dirt. So, it doesn't have to be completely made of dirt. I had the idea of starting out with a styrofoam core and compiling adobe around it to create the sphere, but I thought I'd ask around before I got the materials.

Any ideas are much appreciated! Thanks

-Louise

Re: How do I make a dirt sphere?

I think I'd try taking the core of choice (styrofoam ball, cheap rubber ball layered with paper machel, etc), coating it in adhesive (probably the cheapest and most available), and then rolling it in a bin filled with dirt. I'd then repeat the latter steps, substituting spray adhesive as necessary. Some kind of wire or string or mesh "armature" might be a good idea to integrate into the surface of the all.

Adobe would work as well, I suppose. What is the recipe that you're using?

that's way better than a cube. If youre're gonna dig a hole, dig it deep. and then with the leftovers, you can make your own family.
But are they hard to dust? how do you know when to stop?

I dont think figuration will work for this one. The "dirtness" will get lost. And we've all got to be careful that we dont say anything "green" with this...that would ruin it too. Dirt and form, dirt and form, dirt and process, dirt and you...we can make this thing relevent and vital yet.

Re: How do I make a dirt sphere?

Our studio has been working on this project for quite some time. While it is not yet completed I will post a work in progress photo. It's still quite wet as we did not expect the drying time to take so long. Fortunately we have enlisted a large number of helpers to accelerate the process.
