Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

Blake, I notice the BBC right away did a good long write-up on your exhibition. Were you on their TV?

About the other art critics in London, it looks like they have to visit too many art shows. Second only to New York, I think London is now the world's top art center.

Any chance, or any plan for you to take the show to NYC ?

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

I had a surprise visitor yesterday. It is Blake coming here for some meetings, and on his way to somewhere else. You see, Singapore is a sort of hub in this region, and Vietnam is not too far away.

Over cups of coffee, we had a good conversation, talking about sculptures, bronze castings, landmine fund raising and public awareness, his exhibition plans, and other things. It was a nice and useful meeting.

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

What a rare treat! Actual people and voices to attach to the purposeful scrawl of thoughts. I hope you had him sign your wall or something.
Blake, hopefully you've started a parade. A subtle parade, but a general movement along a pre-determined path.

Great news! That seems like one of the very few times that members from the Community have had the opportunity to meet outside of the ISC Conference setting.

On another note, a hearty congratulations to you, Blake, on seeing your exhibition to successful fruition.

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

Hello All
Sorry to be out of touch, I have been travelling. It was a 15 hour flight from Singapore to Toronto, and a 12 hour time change but I made it. I think... Tom Waits described how I feel like; "a spent piece of used jet trash".

I was able to meet up with Merlion in Singapore, it was great to meet for coffee and a chat, it made Singapore seem so much more familiar to me to have someone I knew there Thanks Merlion for taking the time to see me.
I have been asked to show Fragments in Saigon and I will try to arrange Hanoi as well, there is even a small chance for a show in Singapore, so it was a very useful trip.

I also meet with some of the people who were removing the landmines in Vietnam, it was a very special time, and although I could not go to the fields that were cleared I was able to speak to some of those who supervised the clearance.

Grommet
I donít think that I have really started anything it is more that I have joined the ranks of so many people who are working to remove landmines and to try to ban cluster munitons. I have started a web site at www.motive-art that speaks of many other projects where artists are doing things for charity, check it out if you have time.

Obseq
Thank you for the tribute and the support you have offered. I am in NY city next week to see a Mine clearance charity in order to try to show Fragments in NY. I hope to see Jason Gillespie while I am here, it is fun to meet people that I have gotten to know through this forum (thanks Russ). I would love to make it to the ISC conference some year and get to know more of the wonderful artistic friends who make up this site.
I will post a note to let you know the outcome of my meetings.
Thanks to all of you for tuning in and Merlion for the coffee.
Regards
Blake

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

as/re critics

being ignored by them was a recurring pain for Frederick Hart, who once said:
"I believe that art has a moral responsibility, that it must pursue something higher than itself. Art must be a part of life. It must exist in the domain of the common man. It must be an enriching, ennobling and vital partner in the public pursuit of civilization. It should be a majestic presence in everyday life just as it was in the past"

not to worry Blake, you are in good company

your work speaks well to those of us who share your tastes
and the cause is a good one

I long for a world wherein,
armies and governments build more than they destroy, and dispose of their leavings properly.
and
figurative art is more prominent than statuary and the abstract.

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

Good show Blake, and congratulations, for getting a show for FRAGMENTS arranged not only at NYC, but also at London again. I wish I can accept your invitation to attend your exhibition openings and say Hello there.

I notice the London show in May is near the New York show in April. They'll make you very busy at around these periods.

I notice on the announcement notice for the two shows, you are using a different phrase to describe the FRAGMENTS shows. It is 'Art for Life's Sake'.

Did you say you visited Vietnam again recently? How was it?

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

You will be welcome Eric.
In fact I hope to meet other sculptors from this site at the show, it will open on the 15th and run through until the 22nd of April. I extend a special invitation to my friends on this site, come anytime!
And thanks for all your support.

At the moment I am arranging the sculptures to be shipped I have 5 cubic meters of creates containing the 19 works. The customs arrangements are scary as this is the first time I have done this so everything is new.

Surprise, there is NO DUTY to be paid because the edition number for each work is limited to 12 copies. But there is still a bond to pay, to import them into NY will be about USD 1000.00 and then there is the cost of shipping.

Anyway Adopt-A-Minefield has been great to work with and the exhibition should be fun...

Look forward to seeing you there!
Blake

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

Dear Friends
Here we go again... this time Fragments in New York in support of Adopt-A-Minefield. If you are in New York please come and see the show and please stop to say hello, I would love to actually meet you in "real" space. I will be present as much as possible and will be speaking about military waste, explosive remnants of war as well as the art and the inspiration behind it every day at 4 and 6 pm. Hope to see you there
Blake

Fragments
April 14-24, 2008

The Chelsea Arts Tower
545 West 25th Street
14th floor
New York, NY 10001

Bronze sculpture exhibition by Canadian artist Blake in support of Adopt-A-Minefield.

Fragments is a unique international campaign using art to raise awareness of our generationsí legacy of landmines and military waste.

In this collection of nineteen works, Blake created every sculpture to be fragmented and then named each after a different type of landmine. The result is a stunning collection of limited edition sculpture that goes beyond commentary to become part of the solution.

Blake has donated the entire Fragments collection to raise awareness for mine action. In the UK in 2007, the Fragments exhibitions generated funds that cleared mine fields in Vietnam and helped to map mine fields in Angola.

For more information about the art, the artist and the Fragments campaign please visit the Fragments website at www.blakefragments.com.

Enquiries are welcome at +1.306.292.9648 or by contacting Adopt-A-Mine Field.

Adopt-A-Minefield engages individuals, community groups, and businesses in the United Nations effort to help save lives by raising funds for mine clearance and survivor assistance and by raising awareness of the landmine problem.

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

Thanks for all your encouragement
Things are looking really good, we set up most of the show yesterday.
Now for some details like signs and if I can come up with a few more lights....
perfection is so illusive.

I will post some photos tomorrow of the show.
The space is great for sculpture, there are not enough walls for paintings but the view from the 14th floor is great, I hope that people will look at the sculpture and not just stare out of the windows.

I am very excited..

Hope a few of you can make it.
Regards Blake

Re: FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION

Saw the show. Top notch. Talked sculpture and life with Blake for some time. Those figures are much more powerful in person - the mutilation aspect becoming more prominent. We are very used to seeing figurations missing heads and limbs, plain old antiquity. But these are much more. Though He achieves his fragmenting by the blows of a hammer, the pieces look to be "torn" apart. They are broken flesh not broken clay. They have much more "edge" than you might think. They are not without some "shock". Damned inspiring. I'll post a pic when I get back to Massachusetts.
