My first abstract work
![]() ![]() Not really just the mother mold of my latest sculpture. But one of the more interesting shaped ones I have made yet. The nobbly bits for holding the elastics in place and the joins give it an alien quality to me. |

Reminds me of a trapped half caterpillar. I think you're ready for abstracts. What are you waiting for?

It does make a very appealing abstract, that begs handling.

Re: My first abstract work
I hope Mantrid finds it if not amusing, at least not offensive. Would like to see it finished Man...

The silicon mold inside has taken longer to set than I thought as I didnt use enough catalyst. Hope to be doing the wax today. What yOu see in the pic is just the torso there is threee other moulds (not as interesting looking) to cast. Hope to have a bronze of this sometime next week or maybe later as the parts will be TIGed together and I cant find resonably priced argon round here (they charge a fortune to hire the cylinders. Ill post a pic when Ive done it. Its imaginatively titled 'pole dancer 1'. (I want to do a series of three). |

Re: My first abstract work
keep going mantrid, this is a wonderful entry to a super field.. 'the mold that went too far..' done some myself, usually very sexual, molded a venus figure once, gave it a priapic mother mold.... seemed apt..
another that worked as a piece was a small 'futurist' mountain with hermits cave, it combined in multiple with the plaster piece molded inner mold which was also cast in bronze and gold leafed, it had hebrew numbers, dimples in the segmented sections.. bit like painting by numbers a simple celled organism. rich area

Re: My first abstract work
Just reading along gives me tips that I never thought of, since I taught myself to mold (with a lot of help from all of you here, and a visit from SteveM, thanks). Like the bumps to hold the bands from sliding off. Good idea. Not having been around anyone else actually doing it, it is easy to miss some easy and useful techniques. AND one needs to be ready to receive the tip.
Yeah in the past, I have not mixed my silicone well enough and the last bit scraped off stayed sticky and a pain in the butt! Ah how we learn from our mistakes. Did you show the actual sculpture yet? I missed it. Show as you go. I want to see the pieces and how you segmented it. Scout

http://www.sculpture.net/community/s...ead.php?t=9581 I ended up segmenting it as in my example. There was more bits but the moulds were less complicated and therefore less likely to go wrong. Also I wanted to make it hollow so the more parts means its going to be easier to access the centres for ceramic shell application. |

Re: My first abstract work
Mantrid where are you in the UK? I paid around £50 for pure argon inc the bottle ( no rental ) from Notts!

Re: My first abstract work
Sounds like a good deal. Im in S Wales, but for that price it might be worth a drive there. What size cylinder is that? Do you have contact details?

Re: My first abstract work
I'm not sure what size it is sorry, but if you give Geoff a call at http://www.welduk.com/index.asp he will give you their prices and specs, I'm sure he does the trade shows round the country so it might be that he comes closer to you. If it is too far he might be able to point you in the direction of another supplier closer to you!
