I don't need no stinkin' Xcuse! I do it for art. Since art can't be defined, measured, contained, restricted, you either revel in its boundless unfathomable abstruseness , or you don't understand art and the meaning of life.

Re: What's your excuse?

I've missed seeing you post Joe and while that's as good a one as any, it's a little too cliche and takes too much wind out for the boat to sail with any speed.

Art for arts sake.. Really... Creak.. bloop, bloop,.. Splash..

Not for art's sake! That would be the height of stupidity, spending gobs of time, energy and money for something you can't even define. Not for "art's sake", but for the experience. That's why I live, for the experience. If I can't experience life, pull the plug.

Re: What's your excuse?

Are you asking for an excuse for doing it or not doing it. Art is what we do. No excuses needed. Most artists I know do art every day. It's what we do. Everything else has to wait for a break in the art.

I do art because my mind would not work otherwise. It keeps me ticking. Scout

I like all of these answers and Cheese, your honesty is funny.

Scout, not doing it has its own sad and sorry excuse and doesn't count. The question more aptly framed is what got the ball rolling and not what made it stop, but then again, if the ball did actuially stop then okay, what made it stop?

I ain't no lawyer..

True Joe, it's a different question, but the original seemed so vague as to illicit only simple one-liners and thus served merely as tinsel on the tree. My apologies for asking a question that illicited simple one liners and tinsel.

I was thinking about what got it all rolling for me, true love or love at first sight and the inability to self-actualize that.. I'm a natural born show-off and think like Cheese and the first pair of marbles I ever made I sent to a girl I loved via U.S. postal service and that very same day she said she didn't want to talk to me anymore.. lol

Re: What's your excuse?

alternately:

I shape it, build it, sculpt it, and/or bring it into being
'cause that's what I want to see

the zen man in me thinks i aught to be satisfied with just being one with what i perceive...

there is a story about the original undifferentiated god 'chaos' and the younger gods of the east, west, north, and south:
The younger gods, coming upon chaos, were saddened that chaos had no openings for eyes, ears, mouth, anus, etc..., and taking pity on the old god, proceeded to puncture him to form the above mentioned openings.
Sadly, in their good willed enthusiasm they killed the old god.

but then again
The future is molded by one's expectations
so
dusting oneself off after one of our peccadilloes (like killing the progenitor god)
shapes form by my will to approximations of my preconceptions
and it's mostly a delight
getting high on instant gratification

Why do I make art? Because I must.

Re: What's your excuse?

To me doing art is almost as necessary as breathing or eating. These provide the physical body with required elements, but the soul and mind need nourishment too, and ART fills that requirement for some, or pretends to...
