david smith's gargoyle statue
Authorities are telling an artist that his nine-foot iron sculpture of a nude male gargoyle has to go or face $1,000 fine and $100 a day penalties.

Anatomically correct gargoyle statue outrages Arizona neighborhood
Arizona artist David Smith's neighbors may not know art, but they know what they don’t like — his 9-foot-tall monster with large ‘offensive’ genitali

I suppose the laughable, pathetic thing is, so far in 15 mins of searching I haven't found ONE photo of the "offending" penis" and all of the news sites either blur it or took photos with shadows hiding it.

That's Arizona. The East Coast has Appalachia; the West Coast has Arizona. I just drove through there last week on my way back home. There were radical right wing billboards all along Interstate 40. I drove fast to get out of there and into New Mexico.

Re: david smith's gargoyle statue
Figures, though I never thought of AZ as being a right wingery kind of state, more "wild west frontier" but then they have that nutty sheriff Joe there...
I just think it's hilarious how people get all bent out of shape over an iron penis on a statue of a fictional creature! I noticed in the video there were at least two horses behind a fence and horse trailers I assume are next door to this guy's place, what do the neighbors do, especially about dem young'uns when things naturally "happen" there I have to wonder LOL.

Oh and by the way, according to the article son this, the county said he could apply for a "use permit" which as you can imagine- carries a fee to the county for the permit!
So in effect, if he BUYS a "use permit" and doles out the funds to the county coffers, the "offensiveness" and I assume the fool neighbor that complained- just magically goes away? The fact they trotted out the permit thing proves it's about the county trying to scrape more money off landowners.

Hope the ACLU ditches these fools and the guy keeps his sculpture up as is.

Yavapai County officials want Louis Smith to remove statue from his five-acre property following neighbor complaints. Lynn Chaplin, county land use specialist, tells the Prescott Daily Courier that the statue in altering "the character of the neighborhood."
I've seen pictures of this "neighborhood" and it looks like little more than a barren ROCK QUARRY! there's no tree lined streets with manicured lawns and concrete driveways, it's all desert, rocks, sand and gravel, with fences, horses, horse trailers, metal shed buildings.

Re: david smith's gargoyle statue
That artist needs to change his name, he is giving the original 'David Smith' a bum rap.
