“THE GREATEST” Next LAS VEGAS BIG Dream!
“The GREATEST” is a Big idea, a big new dream in a city built by big dreamers, Las Vegas! It’s a big Vegas dream long overdue, and with a timeless purpose? When most in Vegas doesn't reach for immortality, and instead meets with the wreckers ball, what could have lasting value? What could reach deeply into one ongoing enterprise of the Las Vegas past, it’s vital present and limitless future?
“The Greatest” may be the answer, part of the changing new values of Las Vegas. It may not be the biggest like the MGM city center project, acres of land, giant condos, hotels and 7 billion dollars, but it has something else that goes way beyond that exercise in BIG spending? ”The Greatest” gets it’s power and edge from one source that has kept Vegas viable all these years and continues to do so, Boxing. After all Boxing championships, new fighters, even new fighting styles, pump up Vegas like the greatest “Ali versus Frazier” match ever did. But what is “The Greatest” and why is it one artist’s Big dream?
Already this Big dream, has seen it’s inclusion in the new book by Kassia Broddy coming out called “The culture of boxing” in it’s chapter the future. Publisher Reaktion Books, London. The Las Vegas Art Museum and now the contemporary Artists Gallery, have mounted solo exhibits of the models, and art works related to the project: But what about the boxing community, it’s fighters like, Oscar Dela Hoya, Muhammed Ali, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Carlos Palamino, Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather and it’s fight promoters Robert Arum and Don King have been contacted or are being contacted to join in and help give Boxing a great new image. Even movie stars, and certainly Sylvester Stallone (Rocky films) who has built a career out of boxing, James Woods, Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby), Russell Crowe (Cinderella Man), Robert DeNiro, Martin Scorcese (Raging Bull), George Clooney (loves Vegas) and many more are also being contacted through their Hollywood agents. Great art demands and commands great supporters especially for a great cause.
“The Greatest” in it’s two parts is simply the greatest art sculpture monument and memorial ever conceived for the boxing capitol of the world, Las Vegas. Over 80 feet tall, and 110 feet long, this living monument is a tribute to all fighters, past, present and future (and yet to be future champions, but how is that possible?). It’s two parts, the first is called “The Gloves” and is one of the most powerful visual icons ever, of two boxing gloves touching as in the opening round of a bout, but turned on end vertically and cast in stainless steel and bronze. A true Pop art style, Boxing icon for the ages. Beside this vertical art work stands “The Fighters Wall” a living monument of black granite blocks six feet by six feet tall, some 110 feet long upon which are mounted cast stainless steel plaques of champion fighter's "Fist imprints and signatures" similar to the Hollywood cement imprints of stars, except these plaques stand vertically, allowing all viewers to compare their own fists next to those of “the Greatest” boxers who ever lived, live and fight, and will live in the future of Vegas, and future of Boxing.
Exhibition on through March, 24, 2007 at “The Contemporary Artist’s Gallery”, Holsum Bread Factory arts center, downtown, Las Vegas, NV.
