Just a random question I was curious to read about other people's view points...where to you sign your sculpture, and why? ....I have seen some pretty interesting signatures lately and it just made me think and wonder what makes me do what I do.

I'll go first...for the most part I sign mine on the bottom before I cover it with felt, but on my larger outdoor pieces I tend to sign the side of the base. My signature is typically engraved.

Stow,
I work in bronze and I prefer to sign my scuptures in the clay stage when I'm finished or nearly finished with the modeling. Its a personal ceremony, an act of closure. Where I sign depends on the piece, but I make it visible, while trying not to detract from the work. I prefer it to be legible also, but it doesnt always come out so clean and I like to leave it "as I signed it," not all touched-up.

Did I interpret correctly that you cover your small works' signatures in felt? If so I am curious why. Having your name on your works helps future clients find you.

I totally agree with Rick B the signature needs to be seen man. I also use the signature as a close for the piece as to where I sign that depends on the piece and what medium. Also I dont sign them till there done as a result i have several pieces that look done but are not signed. There is a piece of sculputure in Calgary that has the worst signature Ive ever seen. Its sad really cause I think the sculpture is great but the guy goes and puts his mark all across the sculpture and totally ruins it. Nice lettering in granite but huge and colored and after it says something like sculptor extrordinare. So I guess I think that however you do it , name, just initials, what ever, put it out of the way so it doesnt interfere but can still be seen by some one wanting one for them selfs.
