I am writing this to ask if anyone has contact info to get on mailing lists that would have sculpture opportunities. I have managed to get on a few but it always seems that I will discover a new work out there and find out that it was a commission , call for entry which I never heard about. I am just trying to get connected so I am not always one step too late. Also if anyone has any suggestions as to how to market your work that would be helpful too.
thanks
Matt

Hi, Are you on the City of Kansas City Mo. web site mailing list?
www.kcmo.org/pubworks.nsf/web/art OR Email them AT porter_arneill@kcmo.org , I hope I've got them right.
They show a lot of opportunities and will Email them to you if you're on their list.
Sculpture mag also has listings both in the mag and on line but I think you've got to be a member at the $95. a yr. rate, I think!
Have fun and I hope I've helped.
Have a nice day,
Jeff

How effective is using such sources? With everyone and his dog looking for the same opportunities at the same time, what makes such a list worth subscribing to?

Hi Gary, If you check out the opportunites (for commissions or shows) and follow up on the ones that interest you, a nice commission or exhibition opportunity might be in your future. Just because a million artists look at these lists doesn't mean that YOU couldn't win one. You've got to be in it to win it, Gary.
I've lost out more often than not but the largest amount of sculptors to vie for a commission that I tried for was 137. I didn't get it but my point is, that's not a lot of competition.
Having current slides, CV, supporting material and following the guidelines of the organization you're dealing with will give you a shot.
A friend of mine just got a $300,000. commission, he's no big name sculptor and he competed against 108 others, some of whom were.
Not a lot of people are prepared to enter these things or have the followthrough to complete them.
Luck favors the prepared mind!
Have a nice day,
Jeff

Try "art Calendar". It is a small artist magazine that has many resources and listings for artist. It also has many articales on copy rights and business subjects for artist. A great source for ideas on the business of art and listings.
